Performing Apprentice Auditions for the 2016-2017 Season

Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) is seeking actors to audition for its Performing Apprentice (PA) Program for the 2016-2017 Season.  CTC’s PA Program is one of the most intensive in the nation.  It offers a comprehensive opportunity for gifted young actors ages 19 and older.  PAs have the unique opportunity to perform on our stages alongside our Resident Company members, student actors, and locally, nationally and internationally renowned guest artists.  PAs perform in lead roles, ensemble roles, understudying, and participate in readings and workshops of new works.

CTC is committed to adding excellent new works for young people to the canon.  The company is one of the few in the nation to employ a full time Director of New Play Development.  CTC has collaborated with dozens of national and international artists and playwrights including, but not limited to: Carlyle Brown, Kia Corthron, Nilo Cruz, Jeffrey Hatcher, Naomi Iizuka, Garrison Keillor, Cheryl West, Steve Cosson, Michael Friedman, Greg Banks, Kevin Kling, Philip Dawkins and Will Power; directors Charles Randolph-Wright, Rachel Rockwell, Peter Rothstein, Sean Graney; choreographers Danny Buraczeski, Joe Chvala, Shen Pei and Uri Sands; composers Justin Ellington, Michael Koerner, David Mallamud, Alan Schmuckler, Michael Mahler and Ruth Mackenzie; and international ensembles from, Sweden, Australia, Scotland and Italy.

CTC is the first theater for young people to win the coveted Tony® Award for Outstanding Regional Theater (2003).  Established in 1965, CTC is the recipient of the Children’s Theater Foundation of America Medallion, the National Governor’s Association Award, the prestigious NEA Access to Artistic Excellence Award for New Play Development for two consecutive years, and was named by Time® Magazine as the number one theater for young people.  CTC is one of the largest professional theater companies in the nation.

Auditions for 2016-2017 Performing Apprentice Program

Children’s Theatre Company is actively recruiting and seeking performers of color, performers with disabilities, and LGBTQ performers for all casting, recognizing the value and importance of reflecting the diversity of our audience on stage. As a national leader in the field, Children’s Theatre Company serves our region’s intergenerational audience of over 265,000 children, teachers, families, and community members. 

Unlike other apprenticeships where you pay to participate, the Children’s Theatre Company Performing Apprentice Program pays YOU. Apprentices are paid a weekly salary of $455, participate in company health insurance and receive 15 weeks EMC credit. There is no crew, strike, or other technical requirement. PA contract for next season will likely be from September 2016-June 2017.


  • Two 1-minute monologues, contrasting in both style and tone
  • Two songs of 16 measures: one up-tempo, one lyrical. Songs can be from the musical theater canon or another genre (e.g. rock & roll, folk, gospel, art songs, opera, etc.); you must bring music for the accompanist if you are auditioning in the Twin Cities.

At this time, all February 1st slots are full.  We are adding a second day of auditions on Tuesday, February 2nd from 11:00am-2:00pm. We apologize if you are unable to attend this new audition date, and we will start a waiting list in case of cancellations, but please consider sending us a video submission following the guidelines below.

Auditions are by appointment only, no walk-ins.

Also include your name, phone number and timeframe you are available to audition. We will respond and confirm your audition time.

If you are unable to attend the PA auditions in person, please submit a DVD audition with the following elements.

  • Four 1-minute monologues: contemporary dramatic, contemporary comedic and classical comedic and classical dramatic
  • Two contrasting songs of 16 measures each, with accompaniment: ballad and up-tempo. Songs can be from the musical theater canon or another genre (e.g. rock & roll, folk, gospel, art songs, opera, etc.)

General Information

Auditions for youths (student actors) between the ages of 8 and 18 are held at various times during the year depending on the needs of each production. Typically, we hold auditions anywhere from 6-9 months in advance of the production’s first rehearsal. Our auditions for student actors are usually group-style format. Each audition notice will detail the specifics of who we are looking for, what the actor will do (e.g. sing, dance, monologues, etc.) and how to schedule an audition. All auditions are by appointment only. The student actor positions are unpaid.

Auditions for adult Equity and non-Equity actors are held periodically throughout the year. Preparation is needed and based on the specific needs of each production. Adult actor positions are paid.
