CTC’s Summer Neighborhood Arts Program expands to St. Paul - The Children’s Theatre Company SNAPs into Summer

For Immediate Release: August 1, 2001

St. Paul, MN - The Children’s Theatre Company continues to demonstrate its commitment to Metro communities through the fifth annual Summer Neighborhood Arts Program. Earlier this month, fifteen students from the Philips and Whittier Neighborhoods of Minneapolis took part in CTC’s SNAP. And, for the first time, students in St. Paul will have something to "SNAP" about too as the program expands to Dayton’s Bluff Elementary. Over twenty-five students will participate in SNAP’s St. Paul debut from July 30 through August 17.

SNAP, started in the summer of 1994, is a free, three to four week program that provides music, movement and acting classes to neighborhood children. Students, ages 9-12, experiment with many different expressive art forms such as painting, drawing, journaling, creative movement, music, drumming, creative drama, and theatre. Classes meet from 9am until noon, Monday through Friday. Breakfast and lunch are provided at no charge to the participant. On August 10, the St. Paul and Minneapolis SNAP participants will meet together to take part in a workshop to learn all about Kabuki, a form of Japanese theater. The workshop will be led by David Furumoto, Choreographer for CTC’s fall production of Dragonwings. On Thursday, August 16, the St. Paul students will present a collaboratively created performance for families and the community in the theatre space at Dayton’s Bluff Elementary school. Finally, on Friday, August 17, the Minneapolis and St. Paul participants will "SNAP Together" for a final time to show each other what they have learned during their weeks in the SNAP program.

David Barrow Wiley will serve as Project Director and Acting Instructor for St. Paul SNAP. He trained with Alvin Ailey, and in addition to his work at CTC has performed with Philadelphia’s Freedom Theatre, the Penumbra Theatre, the Minnesota Opera, and Young Dance. Movement Instructor Luctricia Welters Wiley is a long time dancer with Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble and has just moved to Minneapolis. In addition to Alvin Ailey, she has worked with Philadanco Dance Company, Leja Dance Company, Premiere Dance Theatre, and Lula Washington Dance Theatre and has also been involved in musical theatre television, and film. Sylvester "Sly" Tomblin, Music Instructor, is a member of Florida A & M’s world-famous "Marching 100" from Tallahassee. He is a master percussionist, composer and arranger, and has done extensive work with young people. SNAP in St. Paul is being made possible by a grant from the McKnight Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
