Media Alert: Cued Speech for the Grinch and tickets, too!

For Immediate Release: December 20, 2001

WHO:
The Children’s Theatre Company, the nation’s leading theater for young people and families.

WHAT:
A Cued Speech performance of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas has been scheduled for Monday, December 31 at 2:00pm. The performance will be cued by Marsha Van Grady, a Language Transliterator based in Minneapolis. Tickets are available to this performance as well as many other Grinch performances between December 31 and the end of the run (January 5).

Cued Speech is a lip-reading supplement that was created by Dr. R. Orin Cornett to make any spoken language visible for the deaf or hard of hearing. It uses a combination of eight handshapes, four hand placements, and natural lip movement to distinguish the twenty-five consonants and fifteen vowels that are used in the English language so that a spoken message can be understood completely, even though it is not heard.

Phonemes are the sounds that make up words in a given language. The hand shapes are used to distinguish between phonemes that sound different but look similar on the lips. For example, b(uh), p(uh), and m(uh) all have the same lip movement and so would be very confusing for someone trying to lip read. By using a specific hand shape, the transliterator can tell the viewer what sound is being created. An entire utterance is cued by mentally dividing it into consonant-vowel pairs and then forming the consonant's handshape while moving the hand to the vowel's placement for each pair. The net result is that a cue reader sees a unique visual pattern for each sound component in the utterance.

The Children's Theatre Company has been offering American Sign Language and Audio Described performances for many years. This will be the first time that a Cued Speech performance will be offered.
