"When I wished for something to happen to me, I never once guessed what that something would be..." -Bartholomew Cubbins

For Immediate Release: April 15, 2003

The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins WHO:
The Children's Theatre Company, the nation's leading theater for young people and families.

WHAT:
In 1937, Ted Giesel's (Dr. Seuss) second book, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, was published. By the end of his career, he had written and illustrated 44 children's books. While Dr. Seuss' imaginative, creative, and playful works lend themselves to the stage, it was not until the late 1970's that he would personally choose a theater to produce his work - The Children's Theatre Company. He was so impressed by the work of The Children's Theatre Company that it was the only theater in the world he permitted to adapt his literature for the stage. This is the seventh time that Dr. Seuss' book, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins will be produced by the Children's Theatre Company (four times on the mainstage in 1980, 1982, 1993, 1998, in China in 1991, and in Japan in 1998).

"Ted Giesel knew how to make us laugh, but he also knew how to make us think, to question authority and conventional wisdom," says CTC Artistic Director, Peter Brosius, "He gave us fables that endure because they are witty, wise and come from the heart."

Dr. Seuss' The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins is set in the Kingdom of Didd where a young boy, Bartholomew Cubbins, cannot seem to take off his hat in the presence of the King without another one mysteriously reappearing. The King's advisors including Duke Wilfred, Sir Snipps, and the Executioner go to great lengths to rid the boy of the reappearing hats but are, alas, unsuccessful. This Seussian tale has been adapted and staged to include music, dance and theatrical magic befitting a hero who is humble and pure of heart in a world where anything can happen.
