"Farming gets inside you. It's a part of you. It's a part of who you are." -Johnny Diamond, Amber Waves

For Immediate Release: July 21, 2003

Amber Waves WHO:
The Children's Theatre Company, the nation's leading theater for young people and families. Recipient of the 2003 Regional Theatre Tony® Award.

WHAT:
The second production of CTC's 03-04 Season is the regional premiere of Amber Waves, by noted playwright James Still (whose previous work at CTC was A Village Fable). Amber Waves looks at the heart and soul of a contemporary rural Minnesota farm family.

"Farmers are the world's greatest optimists and improvisers," says Peter C. Brosius, director of Amber Waves and CTC artistic director. "They have to be. Their livelihood depends on a series of factors over which they have so little control including commodity prices, international relations and the power of nature - an ever-changing force in its generosity and brutality. James Still wrote a very special play and we honor every Minnesota farm family with this production."

The play introduces us to Mike, Penny, Scott and Deb Olson. The Olson's everyday existence is just like that of many families. Scott plays basketball and the girls think he's cute. Deb plays softball and wears too much makeup (according to Mom). The house needs painting and the kids need new school clothes. But, this family is continually threatened as the pressures of trying to maintain a family farm escalate. The bank loans are overdue. There's a farm auction down the road. The beans are in trouble and they need rain. But, they persevere. The Olson's will give all families hope as they respond to adversity and uncertainty with humor, warmth, tenacity and trust in one another.

WHEN:
Amber Waves previews September 2-4, opens September 5 and runs through October 11, 2003. Amber Waves runs in repertory with Honk! The Ugly Duckling Musical.
