On the Road with The Children's Theatre Company: Celebrating 18 Consecutive Years with our 2003-2004 touring production, Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse

For Immediate Release: August 11, 2003

Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse For the 18th consecutive year, The Children's Theatre Company (CTC) is demonstrating its commitment to all of the communities in Minnesota and the upper Midwest with a touring production of Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. Many tour stops are accompanied by workshops conducted by the performer and/or production crew.

Lilly is back, after playing CTC's mainstage in 1999. Director Darron West brings Lilly's world to life, where colors, friendships, fear and joy are absolute. Kevin Henkes' classic children's books, Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse, Julius, the Baby of the World, and Chester's Way, were adapted for the stage by Minnesota playwright Kevin Kling. "I've tried to remain true to Kevin Henkes' humor and warmth as well as his wonderful approach to the way we view the world as kids," says Kling.

The Children's Theatre Company has toured nationally and internationally for more than twenty years. International touring productions include Dr. Seuss' The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins (Japan, 1998; China 1990), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Rembrandt Takes a Walk, and A Dream to be Continued (Soviet Union, 1988 and 1989). The annual regional tour of the Upper Midwest was established in 1986. For many residents of small towns and rural communities, a CTC production may be their introduction to professional theatre. Presently, Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse will perform nearly 50 times in eight Midwestern states from September to December of 2003.

Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse receives major underwriting from its Lead Sponsor, Cargill, and major sponsorship from 3M. Additional funding is provided by the Land o' Lakes Foundation. This activity is made possible in part by a grant provided by the Minnesota State Arts Board through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature. In addition, the project is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
