"I am Lilly! I am queen! I like everything!" -Lilly, Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse

WHO:
The Children's Theatre Company (CTC), the nation's leading theater for young people and families, and recipient of the 2003 Tony® Award for Best Regional Theater.
WHAT:
The Children's Theatre Company gets the year 2004 off to a spunky start with Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse, based on books by Kevin Henkes and adapted for stage by Minnesota's own Kevin Kling. The production, which toured the Upper Midwest this past fall, was directed by Darron L West (who also did sound design), with scenic design by Neil Patel, lighting design by D.M. Wood, costume design by Helen Q. Huang, choreography by Matthew Howe, and original music composed by Victor Zupanc.
Lilly is the self-proclaimed queen of the world; a mouse world where joy and sorrow are absolute, friendships are forever, the line between allies and enemies is carved in stone, and the whole world can change with each new discovery. Her fiery zest for life is fueled by her friends, her parents, the anticipation of a new baby brother, and her red cowboy boots. When it turns out that having a new baby brother around isn't nearly as fun as she thought it would be, Lilly turns her attention to her beautiful (and surprising) new purse, the coolest teacher ever, and a magical Light Bulb Lab. You can't keep a good mouse down and Lilly remains ultimately and forever, invincible.
"Lilly is vibrant and extreme in the very best possible ways," says Peter Brosius, CTC's artistic director. "She embodies the spunk and potential that live within every young person, and even some adults. Kevin Henkes' stories and illustrations so brilliantly capture the aliveness of childhood, Kevin Kling's adaptation lovingly brings that enhanced sense of reality into three dimensions, and director/sound designer Darron L West has infused this production with spirit and heart that is both immediate and nostalgic. It is a joy to bring Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse to our mainstage after a wildly successful tour throughout the Upper Midwest this past fall."

Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse previews January 20-22, opens January 23, and runs through March 6, 2004.
