PROM: CTC's Second Teen Project
For Immediate Release: February 5, 2004
WHO:
The Children's Theatre Company (CTC), the nation's leading theater for young people and families and recipient of the 2003 Tony® Award for Outstanding Regional Theater, in collaboration with the OBIE Award-winning, experimental theatre company, New Paradise Laboratories (NPL) in Philadelphia.
WHAT:
The Children's Theatre Company continues to expand programming for teen audiences with PROM, an original theatrical piece created under the direction of Whit MacLaughlin, artistic director of New Paradise Laboratories with scenic design by Matt Saunders, costume design by Rosemarie McKelvey and lighting design by Rebecca Fuller. The performance ensemble consists of teen actors, and CTC's resident acting company. PROM will take place at Franklin Art Works in a combination of living-gallery, promenade and presentational theatre styles.
PROM is a fantastic voyage into the wicked and weird thing called "Prom." It will encompass things that are loved, feared, imagined, remembered, hated, idealized, demonized and fantasized about this spring dance that has become such a major part of American culture. PROM will have audiences witnessing (and perhaps reliving) those once-in-a-lifetime moments of "making the ask," finding a dress or renting a tux, the pre-prom dinner, piling into and out of limos, and crowning the King and Queen; moments that are very particular to high school but also mythological. Other event experiences will include marveling at the dangerous spectacle of teachers and chaperones trying to peer into an idealized past, just as high school revelers try to peer into an unknowable future.
"PROM will infiltrate the soul of the most incredible, most overrated, most complicated, and most outrageous event of your high school career," said director Whit MacLaughlin. "Imagine a big party in a landscape designed by Salvador Dali. Painted by Brueghel. With Einstein and Sonic Youth thrown in for good measure. We're going to make full use of the exquisite and strange old movie house that is now the Franklin Art Works. PROM is going to be more than just a play. It will be a theatrical experience."
This project was commissioned as part of CTC's teen programming initiative, funded in part by the Wallace Foundation LEAP grant (Leadership in Excellence in Arts Participation) and the Rockefeller Foundation MAP fund (Muli-Arts Production).
