CTC's Around Series Captures Snapshots - A chance for young people to experience two very different worlds

For Immediate Release: February 27, 2004

Snapshot Silhouette Minneapolis, MN – The Children's Theatre Company continues its Around Series during the run of Snapshot Silhouette, in order to fully capture the cultural differences that are represented in the play. The series consists of events that will strengthen young people's awareness of the world they live in, and enhance the theatergoer's experience.

Snapshot Silhouette, a world premiere play, reflects the conflict between two distinct communities in the Twin Cities (African-American and Somali), and explores what happens when those communities collide. Rebellious Tay C finds herself sharing her bedroom with Najma, a reserved Somali immigrant. They clash culturally, socially and emotionally, but through shared anger and loss the two girls are able to form a strong bond of friendship, which results in new kind of family.

CTC's Around Series will feature four different events and two art exhibits, each helping to give insight into the Somali and African American cultures. From food and film, to music and crafts, these events will celebrate cultural differences, while also helping to build bridges between them.

A Celebration of Two Cultures
Saturday, March 20th • 4:30-7:30 PM
Event is FREE. Food will be served buffet-style (try a little bit of everything) for $10 per plate. Somali poetry, African American spoken word, hip-hop dance class led by Rickie Stokes, African crafts, soul food…all of this and more will fill CTC's Red Lobby on Saturday night after the 2:00 pm performance and prior to the 7:30 performance of Snapshot Silhouette. Audience members can get a henna tattoo, purchase some Somali and African American goods and listen to the sounds of DJ Disco T. See it. Learn about it. Try it!

Traditional Food and Music and Autograph Night
Wednesday, March 24th • 5:30-6:30 PM
Reservations required for the Somali dinner: $5 for children, $10 for adults. Audiences are invited to come early and try some Somali food before the performance of Snapshot Silhouette. All are invited to be energized by the music of Sangoub, one of Somalia's best-known musicians. Also, stay after the performance to talk with the actors about the show and to get their autographs.

Interfaith Dialogue
Saturday, April 17th • 4:00-5:00 PM
Event is FREE. Audiences at the 2:00 PM show are invited to stay for a post-performance dialogue. Led by leaders of various spiritual organizations, the dialogue will explore issues of cultural differences, conflict resolution and loss. Audience members will have the opportunity to talk with one another and share their points of view with the larger group.

Photographs by East African Teens
On-Going Exhibit • March 16th – April 17th
In conjunction with the Hennepin History Museum, this exhibit explores the lives of Somali and other East African teens living in Minneapolis. Along with the photographs, audience members will be able to read journal entries about their lives in their adopted home.

Tree of Many Cultures
On-Going Exhibit • March 16th – April 17th
This beautiful, shining sculpture was created by the students of Webster Elementary School in St. Paul. Images etched into tin hang from the tree, representing the diverse cultures and backgrounds of the students.

All events are open to the public as well as ticket holders, and take place in CTC's Red Lobby.

Snapshot Silhouette opens March 19th and closes April 17th. Images are available on-line at www.ctcpix.org.
