'I love America! Except Dodge Ball they throw too hard. Except a building falls in New York and suddenly people look at me funny, my veil. Except that old Somali man they killed cuz 'We hate Muslims.'' –Najma, Snapshot Silhouette
For Immediate Release: March 4, 2004
WHO:
The Children's Theatre Company, the nation's leading theatre for young people and families. Recipient of the 2003 Regional Theatre Tony® Award.
WHAT:
CTC's second winter production will be the world premiere of Snapshot Silhouette, written by noted New York playwright Kia Corthron. Through CTC's new play lab, THRESHOLD, Corthron has created a play that reflects two distinct communities in the Twin Cities (African-American and Somali) and an unexpected friendship that is born of the collision of those communities. When the rebellious Tay C (a 12-year old African American girl living in the Twin Cities) must share her bedroom with the reserved Najma (a recent immigrant from Somalia), they clash culturally, socially and emotionally. Through shared loss and anger, however, they are able to bond and create a new kind of family.
At the beginning of this story, these two young girls only see their differences. One calls the other lazy. One thinks the other is a goody two-shoes. They eat differently, dress differently, pray differently and act differently. As the story unfolds, they begin to see, as we do, their many similarities. They share school, their sisters, their mothers and lost fathers, their fascination with graveyards and poetry, and their love of the feel of fresh wind blowing across their faces as they walk – or pedal – home.
"This is a play about conflict and hope," says Peter C. Brosius, CTC artistic director. "Kia Corthron is helping us shed light on one of the challenges in the Twin Cities right now – the conflict between the African American and immigrant Somali communities. And, we hope that light will help build a bridge to dialogue, discussion and understanding. There are no parallel lines in nature. Our trajectory on earth either brings us closer to understanding one another, or tears us further apart. This is a story where the lines collide, then pull apart wildly and finally, merge together in a soaring, hard-won hope."
Snapshot Silhouette is directed by Michael John Garces with scenic design by Troy Hourie, costume design by Christal Weatherly, sound design by Victor Zupanc and Chris Heagle, original music by Victor Zupanc and dramaturgy by Elissa Adams.
