WHAT:
The 2004/2005 season opening will continue with the world premiere of Hansel & Gretel, a new musical, adapted by Rosanna Staffa with lyrics and music by Ruth MacKenzie. With direction by Peter C. Brosius, the production has scenic design by Michael Sommers, costume design by Kärin Kopischke, lighting design by Geoff Korf, choreography by Joe Chvala, and stage management by Erin Tatge and Kathryn Sam Loftin.
This world premiere, developed in CTC's new play lab, THRESHOLD, is a first-time collaboration between Staffa and MacKenzie. The result is a classic tale unfolding in untraditional and surprising ways. The team has created an inventive musical that is a feast of wit and calamity. The retelling is inspired by the plays of Nobel prize-winning Italian playwright, Dario Fo, the tradition of Commedia Dell'Arte, and the folk music of Napoli. The language is lyrical; the music both earthy and ethereal. As in all fables, life and death play together, allowing us to swing between the extremes of outrageous laughter and heart-rending pain.

Hansel & Gretel previews August 31, September 1 and 2, opens September 3, 2004 and runs through October 9, 2004. The production will run in repertory with Go, Dog. Go!
