CTC for Teens '05 - Warning: YOUR COMMUNITY MAY BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH.
STAND: A Festival of Theatre, Art and Personal Re/Action
Splash Hatch on the E Going Down by Kia Corthron
For Immediate Release: January 4, 2005
WHO:
The Children's Theatre Company (CTC), the nation's leading theater for young people and families, recipient of the 2004 National Governors Association Award for Distinguished Service to State Government in the field of Artistic Production and recipient of the 2003 Tony® Award for Best Regional Theater.
WHAT:
On Thursday, February 3, 2005, The Children's Theatre Company, will open its annual teen production: "Splash Hatch on the E Going Down," part of STAND: A Festival of Theatre, Art and Personal Re/Action.
Set in contemporary Harlem, the play tells the story of Thyme, a fiercely intelligent, socially minded 15 year old who, along with her young husband Erry, is preparing for the birth of their child. Thyme's quest for knowledge is limitless. She is obsessed with learning about her pregnancy and methods of delivery, as well as the environmental health of the earth and her surroundings. Erry is obsessed with supporting his family and takes a job demolishing old buildings, unaware of the dangers of lead paint and asbestos. This young couple deals with both life and death as they face the miracle of birth along with the personal ravages of environmental racism. Directed by CTC artistic associate Rebecca Brown, the production has scenic design by Seitu Ken Jones, costume design by Kathy Kohl, lighting design by Rebecca Fuller, sound design by Darron L. West and stage management by K. Jason Bryan. The acting company features Sonja Parks, Aimee K. Bryant, Will Sturdivant, Marvette Knight, and Gregory Stewart Smith.
The theatrical experience of Splash Hatch on the E Going Down will be enhanced for teens as they explore the themes and issues of the play artistically throughout the STAND Festival. The Festival components include Juxtaposition's work with teens resulting in the Visual Art Installation; The STAND Jam, an evening of spoken word created and performed by teens with mentoring by Toki Wright and Desdamona; selected scripts from CTC's playwriting program Write Now!, facilitated by Jorge Cortinas, will be read; and A Community Forum organized and led by Boise Jones (Environmental Justice Advocates of MN) on environmental racism and environmental justice featuring Representative Keith Ellison and Peter C. Brosius.
STAND Festival Residencies and Forums
These events will involve guest artists going into the schools to discuss and create art in response to the issue of environmental justice. These works will then become part of the STAND Festival in the form of art exhibitions, spoken word/poetry jams, and staged readings of students' written work.
Issues Forums with Boise Jones and Peter C. Brosius
These community forums will give participating students more background information about environmental racism and open a dialog about the ways in which visual, written and performance arts can be vehicles for social change.
