"There are some things you can't imagine. You have to see them for yourself, and not seeing them is like being half alive." -Princess Briar Rose

For Immediate Release: August 10, 2005

Sleeping Beauty WHO:
The Children's Theatre Company (CTC), the nation's leading theater for young people and families and recipient of the 2003 Tony® Award for Outstanding Regional Theater.

WHAT:
CTC's 2005/2006 season, sponsored by Target, opens with the American premiere of Sleeping Beauty, by Welsh playwright Charles Way (and plays in repertory with 4-ISH) The production is directed by Greg Banks (who last directed Antigone at CTC), with scenic design by Donald Eastman, costume design by Mary Anna Culligan, lighting design by Robert Wierzel, original music and sound design by Victor Zupanc, choreography by Joe Chvala, fight direction by Richard Raether and stage management by Erin Tatge. The 7 member cast includes CTC's resident acting company members Gerald Drake, Dean Holt, Marvette Knight, Autumn Ness and Reed Sigmund, as well as guest artists Sonja Parks and Annie Ennenking.

In choosing a play to open CTC's 40th anniversary season, artistic director Peter C. Brosius was drawn to Charles Way's adaptation of Sleeping Beauty because of the reality of the family dynamic the playwright brings to this fairytale, and the script's commitment to the truth of a child's point of view about coming of age.

"Once we found this fantastic script, I knew that Greg Banks would be the ideal director," said Brosius. "And not just because the playwright and director both come from the east side of the Atlantic, but because Greg will bring a gorgeous clarity to this new telling. As we saw with Antigone, Greg uses an actor-based, highly transformative directing style. The events on stage come out of the body and work of each actor. Their presence and talent combined with simple production elements create a dynamic stage picture."

Sleeping Beauty is…Sister witches – one bright, one dark. An orphaned baby girl delivered to a childless King and Queen. Dark and bright spells. A playmate who is half-man, half-dragon. A spindleless kingdom. A spineless prince from a neighboring kingdom. A willful princess. A friendship. Sleep. Imprisonment. Rites of passage. Rescue. A kiss. And so much more...

This American premiere was commissioned and first produced at The Polka Theatre in London and was subsequently produced in Johannesburg, Sweden and Russia. The production runs in repertory with 4-ISH.

WHEN:
Sleeping Beauty previews August 23 thru 25, opens August 26, 2005 and runs through October 29, 2005.
