ISH Institute residency is FREE for teens at CTC

Teens' original work will be performed on CTC's main stage
Think stomp-ISH, hip-hop-ISH, and beatbox-ISH - Just like 4-ISH

For Immediate Release: August 25, 2005

WHO:
The Children's Theatre Company (CTC), the nation's leading theater for young people and families and recipient of the 2003 Tony® Award for Outstanding Regional Theater.

WHAT:
In addition to their main stage performance of 4-ISH (September 2-October 8) at CTC, the internationally acclaimed performance troupe from Amsterdam, ISH, is teaching their unique brand of theater to teens in the Twin Cities. For eight days, members of the ISH Institute and local artists will help teens incorporate turn-tableism, beatboxing, street dancing, hip-hop, martial arts and acrobatics into an original show that the teens and the ISH company will perform on CTC's main stage. Local artists include 10 Foot 5's Rick Ausland teaching percussion, Juxtaposition's Roger Cummings teaching visual arts and Usry Alleyne teaching media arts. There are currently 40 teens from the Metro area registered for the classes.

ISH is a multi-disciplinary performance company based in Amsterdam that merges extreme sports and physical risk with an intense theatrical sensibility. In 1999, ISH founder, Marco Gerris (then twenty-three years old), drew inspiration for his new style of theater from the disciplines of the street, the club circuit, pop concerts, video games and cartoons. The company consists of Europe's best artists in these various disciplines. ISH got its name because it was impossible to give the company a precise definition.

The objective of the ISH Institute residency is to give teens the opportunity to work with international artists and learn new skills in several different areas of stage production. ISH encourages teens to take an active part in creating their own show by using their unique talents to express themselves on stage. Consequently, the teens feel ownership and a great deal of responsibility for the project, which can be seen in their creativity, dedication, cooperation and interest in making the show a success. The residency also brings cultures together and fosters discussion about North America and Europe. It encourages the exchange of cultural and artistic skills between ISH, the teens and local artists.

WHEN:
The ISH Institute residency for teens is FREE and will take place in CTC's new McGuire Education Center from August 27 – September 3 from 10:00am-5:00pm daily.
The FREE original performance is Saturday, September 3, 2005 at 7:30pm
