"Lillan on the road set out, there she met a cat..." -The Cat's Journey
For Immediate Release: September 23, 2005
WHO:
The Children's Theatre Company (CTC), the nation's leading theater for young people and families and recipient of the 2003 Tony® Award for Outstanding Regional Theater.
WHAT:
The Children's Theatre Company's 2005/2006 season, sponsored by Target, continues to break new ground with the launch of its much-anticipated programming for pre-schoolers. The Cat's Journey, the first production to occupy the new Cargill Stage, was adapted by Fabrizio Montecchi from Sweden's beloved children's book Kattresan by Ivar Arosenius, with puppets by Nicoletta Garioni and translation by Anne-Charlotte Hanes Harvey. The show will be performed by Lisa Kjellgren and Mĺrten Hedman, two of Sweden's most acclaimed puppet theater artists and members of Dockteatern Tittut (Peek-A-Boo Puppet Theater).
"Having Dockteatern Tittut here is an enormous event for this theater and this community," said CTC artistic director Peter C. Brosius. "We are incredibly proud to have the world's leading puppet theater for pre-schoolers kick off this new programming for CTC."
Dockteatern Tittut was founded in 1977 by Ing-Mari Tirén and Eva Persson. It was the first theater company in Sweden to create and perform plays for very young children (ages 2-5). Using many different puppet techniques and a combination of actors and puppets, with visible as well as invisible puppeteers, the result is imaginative, colorful, clear and poetic. Tittut has a permanent stage in Stockholm but also tours all over Sweden, and all around the world, performing in English or French as needed. Sometimes they just relying on the expressiveness of images, rhythm, and music to tell the stories. (The Cat's Journey will be performed in English.) In 1997, artistic director Ing-Mari Tirén received the City of Stockholm Special Prize of Honour "for artistic achievements that have enriched the cultural life of Stockholm." In 1998, she was awarded the prestigious Prix d´ ASSITEJ.
The Cat's Journey provides a theater experience specifically for preschoolers; from the special booties that the children are given to wear, to the child-sized entrance through which they are invited to enter the performance tent, to small benches and floor seating created for this audience. The play steps inside the warm and welcoming world of Lillian and the cat, where colors and shapes shimmer and shift, and suddenly shadows come magically alive. The company uses 41 puppets, two easels and a rattan trunk to take the children on a fantastic journey that doesn't distinguish between fantasy and reality.
