"It's teenage mythology with loud music." -Whit MacLaughlin, creator and director of PROM

For Immediate Release: February 15, 2006

Prom WHO:
The Children's Theatre Company (CTC), the nation's leading theater for young people and families and recipient of the 2003 Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theater, in collaboration with the OBIE Award-winning, experimental theatre company, New Paradise Laboratories (NPL) in Philadelphia.

WHAT:
The Children's Theatre Company continues its teen programming on the Cargill stage with Prom, an original theatrical piece created under the direction of Whit MacLaughlin, artistic director of New Paradise Laboratories. The production has scenic design by Matt Saunders, costume design by Rosemarie McKelvey and lighting design by Rebecca Fuller. The performance ensemble consists of teen actors, a guest actor, CTC's resident acting company and CTC's performing apprentices.

Prom is the most overrated, overindulged, over anticipated ritual of high school. In Prom, this rite of passage is turned inside out and upside down at breakneck speed, in the form of a sporting event: students versus chaperones. It is a multi-layered barrage of questions and open-ended answers set to a fantastic wall of music and outrageous imagery. Prom is a bittersweet, wickedly funny, wise, thoughtful discovery for those looking forward and those looking back.

When Prom debuted in 2004 as part of CTC's programming for teens, it was named “best stage production” in City Pages' best of the Twin Cities issue, and “one of the year's top ten plays” by the Saint Paul Pioneer Press.

This project was commissioned as part of CTC's teen programming initiative, funded in part by the Wallace Foundation LEAP grant (Leadership in Excellence in Arts Participation) and the Rockefeller Foundation MAP fund (Multi-Arts Production).
