News Releases
"The day she was born people saw giant kangaroos dancing in the clouds." -The Old Man, Tale of a West Texas Marsupial Girl
For Immediate Release: January 30, 2007
WHO:
The Children's Theatre Company (CTC), the nation's leading theater for young people and families and recipient of the 2003 Tony® Award for Outstanding Regional Theater.
WHAT:
The Children's Theatre Company will venture into the New Year with the world premiere of Tale of a West Texas Marsupial Girl by Lisa D'Amour, with music and story consultation by Sxip Shirey. With direction by Whit MacLaughlin (who most recently directed Prom '06 at CTC), the production has scenic design by Donald Eastman, costume design by Richard St. Clair, lighting design by Matt Frey, sound design by Victor Zupanc, dramaturgy by Elissa Adams and is stage managed by Erin Tatge.
In a small Texas town, a very ordinary girl is born with a most extraordinary pouch. Although she has the love and support of her Mom and her good friend Sue, most of the townspeople reject and/or fear her. When she must find a way to stand up to the entire town, what does she rely on? Oh yes, her pouch – her mysterious, magical, powerful pouch. The rhythms of this quirky town are echoed in the original songs composed in the styles of rockabilly and “Texas swamp” blues. Tale of a West Texas Marsupial Girl tells the story of a very special girl who shows us that what is different can most definitely be good, while it celebrates the very specific and rollicking idiosyncrasies of West Texas.
The 14 member company includes members of CTC's resident acting company, guest artists and student actors.
The development of this play is the result of the Playground program, a collaboration between CTC and New Dramatists (in New York City) to foster new work for young audiences and was funded entirely by the Jerome Foundation. It is the second world premiere to have gone into full production from the CTC/New Dramatists partnership. The first was Brooklyn Bridge by Melissa James Gibson, featuring the song, Wire Wings by Barbara Brousal in CTC's 2004-2005 season.
The development of Tale of a West Texas Marsupial Girl was supported in part by the Jerome Foundation in celebration of the Jerome Hill Centennial and in recognition of the valuable cultural contributions of artists to society.
