News Releases
"If there's a door I'll open it. If there isn't, I'll open it anyway." -A.I. Josh, The Lost Boys of Sudan
For Immediate Release: March 13, 2007
WHO:
The Children's Theatre Company (CTC), the nation's leading theater for young people and families and recipient of the 2003 Tony® Award for Outstanding Regional Theater.
WHAT:
Programming for CTC's 2006/2007 season, sponsored by Target continues on the Cargill Stage with the world premiere of The Lost Boys of Sudan, sponsored by MoneyGram. Written by Obie award-winning playwright Lonnie Carter, the production is directed by CTC artistic director, Peter C. Brosius, has scenic design by Debra Booth, costume design by Helen Q. Huang, lighting design by Geoff Korf, composition and sound design by Andre Pluess, choreography by Uri Sands with stage management by Jenny R. Friend.
The 10 member cast includes guest actors Samuel G. Roberson, Jr., Andre Samples, Namir Smallwood, Annie Enneking, Shawn Hamilton, Connor Flanagan, Nadia Hulett, and Sonja Parks; CTC resident acting company member Marvette Knight; and CTC performing apprentice Ashford A. Williams.
The Lost Boys of Sudan tells the story of three Dinka boys - T-Mac Sam, K-Gar Ollie and A.I. Josh on a modern odyssey. When they are forced from their homes by civil war, they band together to do the impossible - walk 1,000 miles to reach Camp Kakuma, a relocation site in Kenya. En route, they endure famine, crocodiles and guerillas.
When T-Mac, K-Gar Ollie and A.I. Josh land in Fargo, North Dakota, the new challenges they face seem as daunting as those on the journey that got them to Fargo. Imagine adapting to a foreign, frozen culture where video games, basketball, school and Skittles are the norm.
"Lonnie has brought an epic and poetic vision to this piece - a piece that lives in verse, dreams and visions," said director and CTC artistic director Peter C. Brosius. "It is at times both hilarious and heartbreaking. It captures the complexity of the Sudanese experience and the humanity at its core."
Playwright Lonnie Carter, who has been working across cultural and racial lines for thirty years, tells this tale using verse, song, dreams and a chorus of cattle. He's developed a unique theatrical language that is vivid and bracing. He is known for making vital and engaging theater out of political and cultural challenge and change.
"I think it's particularly apt for Minnesota audiences to see this play first," said playwright Lonnie Carter. "The transformation of Minneapolis in the last decade with its infusion of people from several continents is as striking as any place in the country. Who better to receive this story of immigration, cultural dislocation and, we hope, real hope for an integrated future that will benefit us all."
