The Children's Theatre Company Names Gabriella C. Calicchio New Managing Director

For Immediate Release: August 17, 2007

Gabriella C. Calicchio Minneapolis, MN - After an extensive eight month search, The Children's Theatre Company (CTC) announces that Gabriella C. Calicchio has been selected by CTC's board of governors as its new managing director. She is currently managing director of Marin Theatre Company (MTC), in Mill Valley, CA, a regional theatre company that provides a forum for contemporary, classic and emerging playwrights and, through expanded and conservatory programs, an environment that introduces people of all ages to the transformative power of theatre. Located in Mill Valley, California, just north of San Francisco, MTC is the only year round professional theatre in the North Bay. Calicchio joins CTC on October 22, 2007.

"Gabriella was the unanimous, first choice selection of the search committee, the executive committee, and CTC staff," said search committee chair Peter Carter (Dorsey & Whitney, LLP). "She brings enthusiastic support for the artistic vision of Peter Brosius and extensive skills that will support CTC's momentum and continued growth in this community. She is a thoughtful, articulate leader and will be a terrific spokesperson for CTC among its various constituencies."

The national search started in December, 2006 with the assistance of Management Consultants for the Arts (MCA), a nationally recognized arts leadership search firm. Dozens of potential candidates were evaluated for the position by MCA and CTC's specially convened search committee comprised of artistic director Peter C. Brosius, interim managing director Karen Bohn, CTC board member Peter Carter as search committee chair and CTC board members Paula Phillippe, Simon Foster, Tim Mulhere, Michael Marguiles and Rusty Cohen. Calicchio succeeds former CTC managing director Teresa Eyring, who led the institution from 1999-2007.

"Gabriella brings to CTC a lifelong dedication to the theatre and a passion for our mission," said Peter C. Brosius, CTC artistic director. "She has distinguished herself as a leader in connecting theater to the community, supporting playwrights, and working brilliantly with boards, staff and community leaders. She is going to be a gift to this theatre and this community and we eagerly await her arrival."

Calicchio has served as Marin Theatre Company's managing director since 2001. Her accomplishments at MTC are reflected in the theater's programming and outreach initiatives, as well as fiscal responsibility. They include overseeing the development and implementation of substantial and varied outreach programs in underserved communities; overseeing the funding requests and development of MTC's first commissions; overseeing the development of the New Works Series for new and emerging playwrights; leading efforts post 9/11 to bring MTC to financial stability; growing the operating budget 25%, operating in the black for four years; and cultivating major prospects for long-term funding of new programs.

"I am so excited about the opportunities at CTC," said Calicchio. "I have always believed that theatre is and must be an integral part of our society. In order for this to manifest, it must start with our young people. They are our future artisans, practitioners and audience members. Artistic director Peter Brosius has transformed our perception of what theatre for young audiences is and it is an honor and pleasure to partner with him and with the entire CTC staff and board to further this work.

Prior to her position at MTC, Calicchio served as executive director of the Diablo Ballet in Walnut Creek, CA from 1999-2001. Calicchio also served as director of theater operations at the Smith Center for the Fine and Performing Arts in Fremont, CA from 1996-1998. She began her arts administration career in Boston where she worked at the Sanders Theatre at Harvard University and the Huntington Theatre, and as the Gallery and Theatre Manager at the Institute of Contemporary Art.

She was a CSI Fellow at Stanford University; earned a Master of Arts, Arts Administration and Education at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA; and Bachelor of Arts, Bard College Drama/Dance Major, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. Calicchio is married to Michael Janes. They have two children, ages 1 and 3. Janes is a project manager for the Digital Arts Alliance which is a program initiative of the Pearson Foundation.

"Gabriella brings valuable experience in a variety of areas critical to the future of CTC as we continue to identify new opportunities to support the development of young people," says CTC board chair Bruce Smith. "Her enthusiasm and preparedness for this position is palpable, and we are excited and confident about the partnerships she will develop with Peter, our talented staff and acting company, our board, and our community."

The Children's Theatre Company opened its doors at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in 1965. Today, the Theatre is recognized as one of the country's leading regional theaters. CTC is the recipient of the 2003 Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre (still the only theater for young people honored with that award), and in 2004 was named the #1 theater for young people and families by TIME magazine. CTC produces an annual season of more than 300 mainstage and Cargill Stage performances and an annual Upper Midwest touring production. Public performances, school matinee shows, regional tour performances, and the Theatre Arts Training Program serve over 300,000 people annually.
