Classes for Age 2-5 and Grades K-1 emphasize creative discovery through art and imagination. Students explore story, expression and play through a multi-lens approach including visual art, movement, books and song.
Theatre Arts Training offers Classes for Grades 2-12 that tackle fundamental skills for the stage in a fun and supportive environment. Offerings include acting, playwriting, improv, musical theatre and more.
For those seriously considering a future in the arts, Pre-Professional Training courses are offered for intermediate and advanced students in Grades 4-12. Students will be challenged to expand their skill set in a disciplined and technique-driven atmosphere.
You will receive a refund minus a $25 cancellation fee if you cancel at least two weeks before your class begins.
No refund or credit will be issued if you cancel less than two weeks before your class begins.
Tuition for classes and camps cannot be transferred between sessions or to mainstage tickets.
No refund or credit will be issued if a student is registered for an age inappropriate class and Theatre Arts Training staff or family determine it to be an unsuccessful fit.

Pick Up and Drop Off
Students in classes/camps for Grades 3 and younger must be dropped off and picked up at their classroom. Students in classes/camps for Grades 4 and older may be dropped off and picked up at the Stage Door.

CTC (and its designees and agents) has permission to utilize my student’s image, likeness, actions, and statements in any live or recorded audio, video or photographic display or other transmission, exhibition, publication or reproduction made of, or at, the class/camp in any medium or content for any purposes, including commercial or promotional purposes, without further authorization or compensation.
Families are welcome to take recordings and photographs of their student in class/camp for strictly personal use only. Any recordings or photos taken by families cannot be used for broadcast and/or distribution via the internet including but not limited to social media sites and/or public websites.
Free Child Admission for Theatre Arts Training Students
Each Theatre Arts Training student is eligible for one complimentary ticket per session, regardless of number of classes. For academic year registrations, complimentary tickets are available for select public performances. Redeem early for best seating and availability.

How many students are in each class?
Academic-year class sizes range from 10-16 students depending on the age group and content. Please know class size maximums are strictly enforced to ensure the best possible learning environment for your student. Register early to secure your spot. All classes are subject to cancellation if minimum enrollment is not met.
Who are the faculty?
All of our faculty are professional educators and artists. Our teaching artists work all over the Twin Cities with organizations such as Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Arts, The Guthrie, Penumbra, Pilsbury House, Mixed Blood and our very own mainstage acting company, among others. We regularly run background checks on all faculty. For more information on specific teachers, please see the “Meet the Faculty” tab of this page.
What should I bring to class?
Students in all classes should wear clothes and shoes they are comfortable jumping, crawling and rolling in. Additionally, some classes include messy art projects.
For dance and movement classes, please wear clothing that won’t inhibit movement. The more clearly the teacher can see your student’s body joints, the more easily the teacher can give technical feedback. Please dress in layers as our studios can be cool in the beginning of class and warm by the end. Hair should be pulled back and out of your student’s face. Please remove all dangling jewelry. Most dance classes require bare feet unless otherwise noted.
For longer classes you may want to pack a small snack. Please note: to ensure the safety of all of our students, we have a strict no-nut policy for both peanuts and tree-nuts (including hazelnut products such as Nutella).
What if my student wants to be in a younger or older class?
We understand that some students thrive in an environment including students either younger or older than their peer group. However, if you choose to enroll your student outside of their age group, and either you or Theatre Arts Training faculty find it an unsuccessful fit, no credit or refund will be issued. If space is available in a different age-appropriate class, we can switch your registration.
Can I try a class before I purchase?
If there is still space in a class, you are welcome to audit the first day. If you like it, you can then register with the Ticket Office. Please let the Theatre Arts Training office know if you are planning to audit a class. Please note: many of our classes fill up and the only way to ensure a spot is to register in advance.
Is there a play at the end of class?
Theatre Arts Training is a process-based program focused on building theatre and life skills. Most classes end with a sharing which showcases the work students have done which may include favorite games and exercises, student-generated work or rehearsed scenes. We do offer a handful of by audition performance programs throughout the year including Junior Company, Senior Company, Junior Intensive and Senior Intensive.
How can my student perform on the mainstage?
For select mainstage productions, CTC casts young actors ages 10+. Theatre Arts Training is not responsible for scheduling auditions or casting for the professional mainstage season. To find mainstage audition opportunities please click here.

Can I drop off my student early?
Theatre Arts Training is unable to provide supervision before or after school-year classes. Please arrange for punctual drop off and pick up.

Where do I park?
The Minneapolis Institute of Art offers paid parking for the public in all of its lots. Please note that there is a 30 minute free grace period in the parking ramp for drop off or pick up, but after that the cost is $5 for the first 2 hours and $1/hour thereafter (max $12/day). If there is Event Parking, the cost will be $7 for the first 5 hours. Limited free street parking is available surrounding the theatre, so please factor this into your travel time.
RAMP PARKING INSTRUCTIONS:
The Parking Ramp is located at 25th Street & 3rd Avenue South.
During Event Parking, this parking lot is credit card only:
- Insert your credit card into the machine to enter into the ramp (any level), this is your payment ($8) for parking. The exit gate will be open when you exit.
- If you are taking advantage of the 30 minute grace period during event parking, be sure to also insert your credit card into the exit machine upon leaving (even if the gate is open); this lets the machines know you were in the facility for less than 30 minutes.
During times that are not Event Parking:
- To pay with cash: Take a ticket on your way into the ramp on any level. Do not insert a credit card otherwise that will be your payment method. Take your ticket to the Kiosk on Level 1 when you leave to pay for your parking. Insert paid parking ticket into the exit machine upon leaving.
- To pay with a credit card: Insert your credit card into the machine to enter into the ramp (any level) Insert your credit card (same card as you used when you entered) into the machine on your exit from the ramp to pay for your parking.
- To utilize the 30 minute grace period: Take a ticket on your way into the ramp on any level, and insert the same ticket into the exit machine upon leaving. If it has been less than 30 minutes, the exit gate will open without requiring any payment.
LOT PARKING INSTRUCTIONS:

Joey teaches theater and music to help his students discover sides of themselves they never knew existed and open their eyes to the endless possibilities of collaboration and imagination. In addition to CTC, Joey chairs the Musical Theatre program at St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists and works with older adults through MacPhail School of Music's "Music for Life" & "Sing for Life" Programs. Joey serves as master teaching artist/mentor with ARTSAGE MN, a training ground for artists interested in teaching the aging population. Working with students age 3 to 101, he continues to learn from his amazing students every day. Outside of the classroom, Joey is an active performer, director, and musical director in the Twin Cities.
Laurie teaches early childhood theatre classes because she delights in opening the door to a new world and then allowing the children to be her guide as they explore the possibilities. Children's imaginations are free from the restraint and clutter of adult realities and she has often been humbled by their wisdom. Her job is to give children the tools to explore their curiosity, express their creativity and share their stories. Along the way they grow in confidence, communication skills and self-awareness.
Laura works in theatre, because she believes in the beauty and importance of ensemble - the art we create in collaboration is always the most evocative, the most influential, the most true. This belief is echoed in her work as a teaching artist. In her classroom, she strives to create a community of artists, who with mutual respect and trust, help each other to grow, explore and create. With a sense of joyful play, we discover new ways to express actions, emotions and characters using our bodies, our voices and our imaginations. We all have stories to tell, and whether her students are toddlers or teenagers or adults, they work together to become stronger, more honest storytellers.
Annie is a dancer, actor, musician and theatrical violence consultant/choreographer. She has performed in the Twin Cities in various capacities for twenty-seven years, and got her start at Children's Theatre Company Conservatory School. Annie teaches physical theatre, stage combat, and acting at the St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists, and with Children's Theatre's Neighborhood Bridges Program.
Sara believes strongly that theatre has an essential place in children's lives. All children are born wired for play. They use play and imagination to understand their lives, and how to communicate and interact with their peers. It is important that children continue to train their brains to play and to create. Sara believes children should be leaders in the creative process. She serves only as a guide to great imagination, crazy wonderful stories and incredible movements children are able to express once they are encouraged to let themselves shine.
Laurie is influenced by the work of Viola Spolin, the mother of improvisation, and her son Paul Sills, the founder of Second City and creator of Story Theatre. She believes in the power of play as a way of unlocking intuition and the importance of working together, creating an ensemble to tell a story. Laurie is a collaborator at heart; she loves to make discoveries in the process of rehearsal and thrills when young actors do the same. Through theatre games and storytelling, her class plays together in a safe and free environment - learning to give and take, supporting their fellow players and trusting their intuition.
Johanna is constantly inspired by the unbridled honesty young students bring to the classroom. Theatre is a fantastic medium for any age group to experience ownership of their own ideas and artistic opinions - every idea is valid and every voice is important. Bringing these values into group play challenges the imagination to grow beyond the individual, creating small artistic communities in every class.
Jason is a music director and composer in the Twin Cities. He counts himself fortunate to work with some of the greatest young talent at CTC! Having grown up in the Twin Cities, and attended Children’s Theatre productions and classes as a child, he is thrilled to work at a place that is so special to him. He primarily works with actors and singers of all ages to tell a story through their songs, especially in the context of theatrical productions. It is exciting to work with large casts and focus on listening to one another and create a stunning ensemble sound. He is comfortable with a wide range of styles and most often he works with the cast of a show to learn and polish the songs and make them dramatically and musically exciting for the audience.
Marya Hart is a pianist, music director and composer based in Minneapolis, whose work has appeared on many area stages. With Matt Jenson, she creates music and lyrics for "Fidgety Fairy Tales: The Mental Health Musical," now in its seventh season. She has taught at Children's Theatre Company since 1999, helping singers find their voices and explore new music, and has created original music for dozens of classes and camps at THEATRE ARTS TRAINING. Marya stresses the basics with her students--how to breathe, how to produce a sound, how to make yourself understood. She loves to analyze music and lyrics to figure out what makes them work and to bring them to theatrical life. When she writes music for classes, she involves students in creating music and lyrics as much as possible.
Matt has been very inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. Children have hundreds of languages with which they express themselves, so he looks for opportunities to explore the many languages that theatre uses to tell stories (acting, dance, music, puppetry, costumes, sets, props, and so on). We follow the interests of the students, all the while looking for opportunities to teach theatre techniques and skills that will support their exploration. The creative process is complex and messy, especially when you are working democratically with an ensemble of 16. It is in the complexity and messiness that unique opportunities for learning occur. He also believes that he is a fellow creator and collaborator with the class. He doesn't know all of the answers ahead of time. He has past experience that he can offer to guide the group as they make their creative decisions, but answers are for the group to discover.
As an interdisciplinary theatre artist, Anton Jones has devoted his career to fusing his experience as a playwright, director, theatre educator, composer/sound designer, and dramaturg into his own unique approach to the creation of live performance. In 2004, he was teaching theatre appreciation and playwriting at the University of Iowa while working closely with Hip-Hop Theatre Pioneer and Guest Artist Will Power by writing the program notes and acting in Will's production of The Seven. Four months later, he was adapting lyrics and composing/performing original music for a production of Good Person of Szechuan while finishing rewrites of his own play Waking Nicodemus which was going into production the following spring. Another 4 months passed and he was holding his MFA from the University of Iowa Playwright's Workshop and relocating to Minneapolis. In 2006 & 2008 he was recipient of the Playwright's center/Jerome Foundation Many Voices Residency where he developed The FUNeral a fusion of Hip-Hop Theatre and Commedia Dell'Arte. He has directed for Pillsbury House Theatre, History Theatre, Climb and Illusion Theatre. As a theatre educator he has taught at The Guthrie, Penumbra, Mixed Blood, Pillsbury House Theatre, Pangea World Theatre, and Imagination Stage (MD).
MEGAN KELLY HUBBELL
Megan Kelly Hubbell is a musical theatre graduate of Millikin University with a dance minor. She works as a voiceover talent, on camera and on stage throughout the Twin Cities. She is a staff choreographer for Benilde-St. Margaret schools, Fridley Middle and Jr High schools, Spring Lake Park HS, Armstrong HS, Roseville Area HS, and choreographs for various theaters including: Children’s Theatre Company, SOAR Arts, Theater in the Round, Eat Street Players, Applause Community Theater, and is a faculty member of St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists. Megan has tons of energy and loves highly physical movement! She believes if you practice the way you perform, you’ll perform at an even higher level. Don’t give up. You are capable of great things!
Taous Claire Khazem has worked as a theatre artist teaching and performing in Algeria, Morocco, Jordan, Egypt, France and Cameroon. In addition to the Children's Theatre she has taught at Interact Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, The Walker Art Center, SteppingStone Theatre, Stages Theater and COMPAS. She has toured her one woman play "Tizi Ouzou" to Portland, Seattle, Bemidji, Ann Arbor and Washington DC. In the Twin Cities she has performed with Theatre Unbound, Pangea World Theater, Interact Center, Off Leash Area, Frank Theatre and Savage Umbrella Taous holds a certificate from the Jacques Lecoq International Theatre School in Paris, France and a B.A. from Macalester College.
As a director, playwright, performer and teacher, Suzy Messerole has been working in the Twin Cities for the past 15 years. She is the co-Artistic Director of Exposed Brick Theatre and a faculty member of St. Paul Conservatory for the Performing Artist. She is passionate about every student having access to theatre training and she believes that every class is an opportunity for students to express themselves fully and completely. Viola Spolin and Ann Bogart are big influences on her curriculum – especially the importance of theatre exercises that build over time and allow room for growth.
For as long as she can remember, Nancy has felt the most alive, the most powerful, the most present while moving her body freely in space. In an open place, she had the ability to transform into anything: a shipwrecked pirate, a dolphin who might save her, a shooting star touring the universe, a bubble, or a mouse! She has spent her life pursuing that love, and searching out opportunities to express herself through dance and theatre. As an adult she has found a new flowering of her childhood passion - watching that same seed blossom in the beings of her students. Every time Nancy teaches a class, she is in awe of the creative process. Sheer brilliance is inevitably unleashed in children when they are given the chance to be heard and seen, when they are given a container for their imaginations. She is always humbled and honored to be a faciliTheatre Arts Trainingor in this very important work. Exploring and expressing our humanity through storytelling, dance and song is a great gift we can give to all our children.
Jesse Schmitz-Boyd resides in St. Paul, MN. Jesse has been teaching dance and movement since 2003 and at CTC since 2012. He performs locally with Alternative Motion Project and Off- Leash Area: Contemporary Performance Works. Jesse holds a B.A. in Dance from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. At UWSP, he danced featured roles in Susan Marshall & Company’s Other Stories and Billy Siegenfeld’s god of dirt. Jesse toured with the Chicago-based RE|Dance Group upon graduation. His original choreography has been presented at the Minnesota Fringe Festival, Movement Arts Day, The Ritz Theatre and ACDFA regional conferences. Presently he teaches at several Minnesota studios including Children's Theatre Company, Zenon Dance School and Ballare Teatro. In his free time, Jesse enjoys science fiction television, gummy worms and croquet.
Jen Scott is a Twin-Cities based performer, teacher, playwright and musician. She teaches at Children’s Theater Company, the Brave New Workshop, Park Square Theater, and has been an artist in residence at Pillsbury House + Theater. Things she loves about improv: that anyone can do it, that any idea is a good idea, that we have to work together, that we have to work towards agreement, that if you're being honest, you're being funny. Plus, it's theatre! And it's amazing amounts of fun.
Reed is an actor who has spent the past 14 seasons as a member of the Acting Company at Children's Theatre Company. He loves creating a classroom environment which encourages the students to make bold, creative choices while reacting and living in the moment onstage. Using extremes in dynamics, he hopes to help students create wild yet truthful characters who can work together to tell amazing stories.
ED WILLIAMS, JR.
Ed has performed at several theatres in the Twin Cities area. At the Children's Theatre Company, audiences saw him in Reeling and Honk. In 2007 he received an Ivey Award. Edward is also a Creative Dramatics/Theatre Specialist for the St. Paul Public Schools. He believes in empowering students to make clear character choices and exploring the characters wants and needs.
Ian Zahren is in his second year of teaching at CTC. After musically directing the junior showcase “Madeline and the Gypsies,” Ian returns to take on another year at CTC! Originally hailing from Iowa, Ian holds a degree in Musical Theatre from Point Park Conservatory. He has made it a personal mission in his life to help young people reach their fullest potentials, using theatre as the means to do so. Ian continually works as an actor and educator throughout the Twin Cities. His credentials range from Off Broadway to International Tours to local Equity Theatres such as The Old Log Theatre and Mixed Blood. Ian currently also teaches at The Saint Paul Conservatory for the Performing Artists and The Youth Performance Company.
Chris has been a theatre arts educator for 15 years. She relishes working with students from an early age and in tandem with parents. She believes the life skills learned and discovered through the dramatic arts are invaluable tools as students begin to create social connections and build self-confidence and awareness of the world around them. As a teaching artist, Chris strives to encourage in her students individual decision making abilities, development of theatrical skill sets and to inspire in them a passion for the arts in all forms.
Emily Zimmer has been enchanted by the theatre and other art forms her entire life. She began performing and teaching at CTC in 2002. Since, she has learned volumes about how to use stories as a way to explore ideas, build community, experiment with change and act out characters. She studied dramatic arts at Macalester College and traveled to Switzerland to go to clown school with the renowned Pierre Byeland. She has performed on the CTC stage, with Frank Theatre, Open Eye Figure Theatre, at La Jolla Playhouse, Dixon Place in NYC and a variety of other venues. She is also the Artistic Director of a theatre program for children called The Chicago Avenue Project at Pillsbury House Theatre.

Children’s Theatre Company is looking for a few extraordinary high school students to assist with Theatre Arts Training classes for the 2017/2018 school year. If you are planning on a career in theatre, this is your chance to work and learn alongside our veteran teaching staff and industry professionals here at CTC. This aggressively hands-on junior internship will have you immersed in theatre, working directly with students in one of our many Theatre Arts Training classes. We work with our junior interns to make connections throughout the building and the community. This year we are offering free classes to our junior interns as well as tickets to local theatre, and master classes with industry professionals.
