Our Education Philosophy
Theatre Arts Training is a process-based program dedicated to providing professional theatre experiences and education to build curious, creative and confident young artists and people. We are more interested in what happens along the journey, from the first day to the last, than in a polished product. With this focus on the education experience, our camps take place in classrooms and rehearsal halls, not on stages.
All students are welcome to participate in all classes (with the exception of audition-based programs). We acknowledge and support that engagement and success looks different for each student, and our faculty prioritizes keeping their teaching style, activities and goals flexible to the needs of our students.
We strive to supply students with source material from diverse perspectives representing communities from a multitude of ethnic and racial backgrounds, economic statuses, abilities, sexual orientations and gender identities.

As part of CTC’s commitment to access and inclusion, at Theatre Arts Training we make intentional choices in our classroom practices to make sure we are a welcoming space for people of all ability, ethnicity, economic status, sexual orientation and gender identity. Each summer camp is a unique experience with a different approach to theatre and different learning outcomes. Use the categories below to help choose the right style of camp for your family:
IMAGINATION ADVENTURE camps focus on dramatic play to explore characters, settings and themes with an interdisciplinary approach, including visual art, movement, books and music.
WORLD PREMIERE camps focus on creating original scenes or plays through acting exercises, group brainstorm and improvisation.
MUSICAL JAM camps bring stories to life through musical theatre. Students will devise a musical with original songs, choreography and characters.
STAGECRAFT camps use visual art such as puppets, scenery creation or props as a starting point for theatrical creation. Tuition includes a supply fee.
SHOWTIME camps rehearse and perform from existing scripts and/or musical scores.
ACTOR'S LAB camps focus on technique-based exercises to strengthen ensemble and individual craft.
For families participating in camps at Children’s Theatre Company (CTC), Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) and Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD), CTC offers Extended Care for students in Grades K-12 camps. Before and/or after camp, your child will participate in free play and organized activities with CTC’s education staff. Please note: Extended Care is not available for Ages 4-5 Camps.
For students attending CTC Camps:
- Morning Extended Care is offered from 8 to 9:30am for $10 per day
- Afternoon Extended Care is offered from 3:30 to 5:30pm for $10 per day
For students attending Mia or MCAD Camps:
- Morning Extended Care is offered from 8 to 9:30am for $12 per day
- Afternoon Extended Care is offered from 3:30 to 5:30pm for $12 per day

General Camp Information
- Grades refer to Fall 2018
- AM and PM camps may be purchased together to create a full day which includes a supervised lunch hour. Please note, this option is not available for Ages 4-5 camps.
- Extended Care is available for those attending camps for Kindergarten and older. For more information or to register, please see the “Extended Care” tab of this page.
- We will not hold camp the week of July 4th.
Tuition, Payment Plans, and Scholarships
You can register online or by calling the Ticket Office at 612.874.0400. We accept check, credit card and money orders. Payment plans are available only when using a credit card by phone. Need-based scholarships are available through the ACT Pass program until all funds are allocated.
- 10% off tuition if, in the same order, you register more than one student in your household or register a student for more than one camp. Some restrictions apply.
- 15% off tuition for current CTC Full Season, 3 Play A and 3 Play B Subscribers. Discount not valid for Preview, Opening Weekend or Pick Subscribers. Some restrictions apply.
- You will receive a refund minus a $50 cancellation fee for Summer Camps if you cancel at least two weeks before your camp begins.
- No refund or credit will be issued if you cancel less than two weeks before your class/camp begins.
- Tuition for camps cannot be transferred to Academic Year sessions or to mainstage tickets.
- No refund or credit will be issued if a student is registered for an age inappropriate camp and our staff determine it to be an unsuccessful fit. Our age ranges are strict.
- Extended Care discount passes are nonrefundable.
Code of Conduct
In order to provide students with a safe and supportive environment, we do not tolerate any form of physical or verbal abuse, harassment, vandalism or the use of any illegal substances. Any behaviors found in violation of this policy will be addressed and the student may be asked to leave classes/camps. No refunds will be issued in the event that the Code of Conduct is violated.
Pick Up and Drop Off
Students in camps for Grades 3 and younger must be dropped off and picked up at their classroom. Students in camps for Grades 4 and older may be dropped off and picked up at the Stage Door.
To ensure the safety of all of our students, we have a strict no-nut policy for both peanuts and tree-nuts (including hazelnut products such as Nutella) and products that “may contain” peanuts and tree-nuts.
If we are unable to contact a parent or if time does not permit, 911 services will be used. All expenses incurred are the responsibility of parent/legal guardian.
Photos and Videos
CTC (and its designees and agents) has permission to utilize my student’s image, likeness, actions and statements in any live or recorded audio, video or photographic display or other transmission, exhibition, publication or reproduction made of, or at, the class/camp in any medium or content for any purposes, including commercial or promotional purposes, without further authorization or compensation.
Families are welcome to take recordings and photographs of their student in camp for strictly personal use only. Any recordings or photos taken by families cannot be used for broadcast and/or distribution via the internet including but not limited to social media sites and/or public websites.
Electronic Device Policy
Students under Grade 9 are only permitted to use phones or other electronic devices in class as an educational tool as assigned by the teaching artist. To encourage our value of community and relationship building, electronics are not allowed during breaks unless being used as a therapeutic outlet. (Students are always welcome to contact their families through the TAT office at any time.) If a student is observed using their phone or electronic device in violation of this or any other TAT policy, they may no longer be permitted to use their device at any time while at TAT.
Free Child Admission for Theatre Arts Training Students
Each Theatre Arts Training summer student is eligible for one free child admission, regardless of number of camps. Complimentary admission is available for select public performances in the 2018-2019 Season. Eligible shows will be announced at a later date. Complimentary tickets are subject to availability and restrictions. Not all performances will have complimentary tickets available. Book early for best choice of dates and seats; complimentary tickets cannot be booked in VIP seats. Complimentary tickets cannot be booked online or via e-mail. Complimentary tickets must be booked by phone at least 48 hours prior to your date of choice. Complimentary tickets are not exchangeable, and may not be applied to past purchases. Complimentary tickets will be rendered void in cases of class cancellation. All tickets will be held at Will Call.
You will not be issued a physical voucher. To book your Theatre Arts Training complimentary ticket, please call the CTC Ticket Office at 612.874.0400 and mention your student’s name and class(es) for verification of eligibility. All children age 16 and under must be accompanied to the theatre by an adult.
Free child admission must be redeemed by August 31, 2018.
How many students are in each camp?
Summer camp sizes range from 15-25 students. These sizes are dependent upon the age group and content. Please know class size maximums are strictly enforced to ensure the best possible learning environment for your student. Register early to secure your spot. All camps are subject to cancellation if minimum enrollment is not met.
Who are the faculty?
All of TAT’s faculty are professional educators and artists. Our teaching artists work all over the Twin Cities with organizations such as Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Arts, Guthrie Theater, Penumbra, Pillsbury House, Mixed Blood and our very own mainstage acting company, among others. We regularly run background checks on all faculty.
What should I bring to camp?
Students in all camps should wear clothes and shoes they are comfortable jumping, crawling and rolling in. Additionally, some camps include messy art projects.
Students are encouraged to bring water bottles and are welcome to bring a healthy snack to have during the camp session. If students are registered for a full day camp, please pack a lunch that does not require refrigeration, nor a microwave. Please note: to ensure the safety of all of our students, we have a strict no-nut policy for both peanuts and tree-nuts (including hazelnut products such as Nutella) and products that “may contain” peanuts and tree-nuts.
For dance and movement camps, please wear clothing that won’t inhibit movement. The more clearly the teacher can see your student’s body joints, the more easily the teacher can give technical feedback. Please dress in layers as our studios can be cool in the beginning of class and warm by the end. Hair should be pulled back and out of your student’s face. Please remove all dangling jewelry. Most dance classes require bare feet unless otherwise noted.
Toy weapons of any kind are not allowed in any of our camps.
Are camp ages based on rising or completed grades?
Camps are designed for rising grades, i.e. the grade your student will be entering in Fall 2018.
What if my student wants to be in a younger or older camp?
We understand that some students thrive in an environment including students either younger or older than their peer group. However, our age ranges are strict, and if you choose to enroll your student outside of their age group, and either you or TAT faculty determine it an unsuccessful fit, no credit or refund can be issued. If space is available in a different age-appropriate camp, we can switch your registration.
Can I try a camp before I purchase?
Auditing is not available for summer camps.
Is there a play at the end of camp?
Theatre Arts Training is a process-based program focused on building theatre and life skills. Most camps end with a Sharing which showcases the work students have done which may include favorite games and exercises, student-generated work or rehearsed scenes. We do offer a handful of by audition performance programs throughout the summer.
Will my camp be on a stage?
With our focus on the education experience, our camps take place in classrooms and rehearsal halls, not on stages. We do offer a handful of by audition performance programs throughout the summer that conclude with performances on a stage.
Do you have camp the week of July 4?
In 2018, we do not have camp the week of July 4.
How can my student perform on the mainstage?
For select mainstage productions, CTC casts young actors ages 10+. TAT is not responsible for scheduling auditions or casting for the professional mainstage season. To find mainstage audition opportunities please click here.

Where do I park?
The MIA offers paid parking for the public in all of its lots. Please note that there is a 1/2 hour free grace period in the parking ramp for drop off or pick up, but after that the cost is $5 for the first hour and $1/hour thereafter (max $12/day). If there is Event Parking, the cost will be $8 for the first 5 hours. Limited free street parking is available surrounding the theatre, so please factor this into your travel time.
RAMP PARKING INSTRUCTIONS:
The Parking Ramp is located at 25th Street & 3rd Avenue South.
During Event Parking, this parking lot is credit card only:
- Insert your credit card into the machine to enter into the ramp (any level), this is your payment ($8) for parking. The exit gate will be open when you exit.
- If you are taking advantage of the 30 minute grace period during event parking, be sure to also insert your credit card into the exit machine upon leaving (even if the gate is open); this lets the machines know you were in the facility for less than 30 minutes.
During times that are not Event Parking:
- To pay with cash: Take a ticket on your way into the ramp on any level. Do not insert a credit card otherwise that will be your payment method. Take your ticket to the Kiosk on Level 1 when you leave to pay for your parking. Insert paid parking ticket into the exit machine upon leaving.
- To pay with a credit card: Insert your credit card into the machine to enter into the ramp (any level) Insert your credit card (same card as you used when you entered) into the machine on your exit from the ramp to pay for your parking.
- To utilize the 30 minute grace period: Take a ticket on your way into the ramp on any level, and insert the same ticket into the exit machine upon leaving. If it has been less than 30 minutes, the exit gate will open without requiring any payment.
LOT PARKING INSTRUCTIONS:
- Parking Lots are located at 25th Street & 3rd Avenue South and 24th Street & 3rd Avenue South.
- Park your car and walk over to the machines at the entrance to the lot.
- Enter in your car license plate number.
- Choose the duration of parking time you would like to purchase.
- Insert credit card or cash to pay for your parking.
- Keep your ticket as your receipt.
How It Works
You must be a current ACT Pass-holder to qualify for tuition assistance. All ACT Pass-holders will automatically receive a Theatre Arts Training tuition discount, until all funds are allocated.
STEP ONE: Apply for the ACT Pass
STEP TWO: Within 1-2 weeks, receive notification by email of Act Pass eligibility, and if accepted, your scholarship tuition discount (determined by financial need).
STEP THREE: Call the Ticket Office or login to your account at childrenstheatre.org to register. Your scholarship percentage will automatically be applied to your purchase. We recommend registering within 24 hours of receiving your award email, as scholarship funds are limited and are available on a first come, first served basis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do I register for more than one child? What if I know we want to take a class or camp in every session?
A. You may only register for one student, one class, and one session at a time. If you would like to register for an additional class or camp, an additional session, or another child in your household, complete your first order including payment, then start a new order. Note: Act Pass holders are eligible for one class per student per academic year session, and one full day camp or two half day camps per summer. If more funds are available closer to the start of the session, we sometimes allow ACT Pass holders to register for additional classes and camps. If this is the case, we will notify you via email.
Q. What if my child’s first choice class or camp is full?
A. When a class or camp is full, a waitlist will be posted. Please join the class or camp waitlist and register for a second choice class or camp. If space becomes available, we will be able to transfer your scholarship to your first choice class or camp.
Q. What if all scholarships funds have been allocated for a session?
A. When we are out of funds for a given session, we start a Scholarship Waiting List. If more funds become available, we will issue additional scholarships. To join the Scholarship Waiting List, email email@example.com to be sent a link to the online form.
Q. My student is interested in an audition-based program. How does that work?
A. Sign-up for an audition. If cast, call the ticket office to apply your scholarship to program tuition. If you would like to hold a spot in a non-audition class or camp in case you are not cast, please register and pay. If cast, we can transfer any paid tuition toward the cost of the program in which you were cast. Please note: being an ACT Pass holder will not impact casting decisions.
